What is Advantage Plus and how does it work?
Introduction
Advantage Plus is a Marketplace feature where Advantage members can expand access to their Advantage titles, by either sharing them with or moving them to the shared collection (also called the consortium). It's designed to improve title selection, circulation, and availability for all members of a shared collection/consortium.
The shared collection/consortium turns on Advantage Plus, and chooses:
- Whether eligible titles are shared or moved.
- If sharing: The Advantage member keeps ownership of the titles, and their users have priority on holds for them.
- If moving: The shared collection/consortium assumes ownership of the titles.
- Who sets up the Advantage Plus plans to share or move titles, the shared collection/consortium or individual Advantage members.
Note: Once Advantage Plus is turned on, it can't be reversed. However, you can prevent new titles from being shared or moved by deleting your Advantage Plus plan.
An Advantage Plus plan controls which titles are shared with or moved to the shared collection/consortium and how often.
When turning on Advantage Plus, the shared collection/consortium chooses whether they want to create a single plan that covers all members or whether Advantage members set up their own plans.
When you set up a plan, you'll choose to include or exclude titles based on:
- Latest checkout date
- Whether there are active checkouts or holds (sharing only)
- Format (ebook or audiobook)
- Lending model
- Pre-sale and on-sale dates
- Date added to the Advantage collection
- Preorder status
In addition to the Advantage Plus plans, there are a few general rules that determine if a title can be shared or moved:
- Titles must be in the One Copy/One User, Metered Access, or On-Demand Class Set lending models.
Cost Per Circ titles, Simultaneous Use titles, and Class Sets aren't eligible. - Titles must be in a format that the shared collection/consortium offers.
For example, if an Advantage member offers audiobooks but the shared collection/consortium does not, then no audiobooks will be shared or moved. - Titles with active checkouts or holds can be shared, as long as they meet the other criteria in the Advantage Plus plan, but they can't be moved.
- Weeded titles will be moved or shared, as long as they meet the other criteria in the Advantage Plus plan.
- Expired titles will be shared, as long as they meet the other criteria in the Advantage Plus plan, but they won't be moved.
- Local content won't be shared or moved.
This is customizable. When you set up your Advantage Plus plan, you'll choose:
- If the plan runs automatically (and shares or moves all eligible titles)
- How often it runs
- When to run it for the first time
Even if a plan is scheduled to run automatically, you can manually review and share or move eligible titles at any time.
Yes. As long as you control your Advantage Plus plan, you can prevent specific titles from being shared or moved. This action is permanent.
Other questions and topics
Yes, all copies of an eligible title are shared or moved.
A title is only shared or moved if all of its copies, in all purchased lending models, are eligible to be shared or moved through Advantage Plus. So, for example, if you own a title in both the Simultaneous Use and One Copy/One User lending models, it won't be shared or moved because Simultaneous Use titles aren't eligible.
Note: New copies of a previously shared title will be shared, even after the Advantage Plus plan is edited or deleted. However, new copies of previously moved titles won't be moved unless they meet your current plan's criteria.
Yes. If the shared collection/consortium controls the Advantage Plus plan, they can edit or delete it at any time on behalf of the whole group. If the Advantage member controls the Advantage Plus plan, they can edit or delete it at any time.
Reminders:
- Titles stay shared or moved, even after the Advantage Plus plan is edited or deleted.
- New copies of a previously shared title will be shared, even after the Advantage Plus plan is edited or deleted.
- New copies of previously moved titles will only be moved if they meet the current plan's criteria.
No, once a title is shared or moved via Advantage Plus, you can't manually un-share or move it back.
In rare circumstances, a title may be systematically un-shared due to publisher restrictions or budgetary concerns:
- If you share a title, then purchase it later as Simultaneous Use, the title will be un-shared due to publisher restrictions.
- If you share a Metered Access title, then later add it as Cost Per Circ, the title will be un-shared if you run out of Metered Access licenses and don't repurchase.
